The king at first resentedthe capture of the Mombasa vessel, but, on learningthe circumstances, confessed the justice of the re-taliation. A treaty of peace was ratified by oathson the Bible and the Koran, and everything doneto make the stay pleasant. Artillery was thenunknown on the East African Coast and the Por-tuguese target practice excited great astonishment.After nine days stay at Melindi, Da Gama sailedfor India and the story of his African discoveriesended. After the voyage of Da Gama many Portugueseexpeditions made settlements at Angola, Sofala,Mozambique and Momba
