whence we purposed to return in the followingMarch. On December 14 M. Dadabhai Naoroji arrived bythe Arcadia at Bombay on his way to the NationalCongress at Calcutta of which he had been electedPresident. He had a great welcome. Flags andtriumphal arches were put up along the esplanade,and he was brought from the Taj Mahal Hotel ina motor car decorated with flowers. An enormouscrowd turned out to welcome him, chiefly of theParsee community, and Parsees were conspicuousin the balconies of the houses and hotels along theroute of the procession and parsee inscriptions ofwelcome hung across the streets. It was a strikingscene from our balcony altogether. The last goldenrays of the sun were slanting across the openesplanade alternating with broad luminous shadowsand along the front streamed a vast white cladcrowd—so different to the black crowds we areaccustomed to in Europe—a white crowd variedwith notes of bright colour and black here andthere, and the red bunting floating around the
