toprotrude several feet, more or less, on the outside. A multi-plicity of ladders of all sizes, charred and cracked potscapping the chimneys, a bake oven large enough for a nightslodging, trapdoors, poles of odd and unnecessary lengths, which serve as occasion requires for jerking meat and dryingclothes, are what confront one on each exit from the diminteriors into the intense sunlight. Mounting higher, the wallsare found to be more delicate and the ceilings lower. The great religious festival of Taos is held annually on Sep-tember 30th. It is one of the best known in New Mexico, andis largely attended by white visitors from Colorado and thelarger cities of the Rio Grande valley; added to these are thou-sands of Mexicans, Jicarilla Apaches and Pueblo Indians—aninteresting and motley throng. As part of the festival, thereis usually a spirited foot race between the Indians of the northand south pyramids, the losing party paying the dues of thepueblo to the priest for the ensuing year.

Homes of the Ancients Pajarito Park —Upper San Juan — Mesa Verde — Chaco Canyon — Canyonde Chelly —Age of the Cliff Ruins HROUGHOUT New Mexico, Arizona, southernColorado and Utah, ruins of ancient habitationsexist in almost countless numbers. Many ofthese ruins are of the same general type as thoseinhabited to-day. Others are beneath the earth,in subterranean caverns, or in recesses of thecliffs. It is only possible herein to indicatethose regions in which the more famous ruinsare located, and tell how they may be visited. Attention maythen be briefly directed to the question of the contents, ageand occupancy of the ruins themselves. For several of the more important groups of ruins of theSouthwest, Santa Fe forms a convenient starting-point. In theregion lying north of Santa Fe and within the pueblo area aremany ruins on small tablelands or in the valleys, but devoid ofthe picturesque interest possessed by the cliff ruins.
