Bonesteel& Otto embarked in the business at Fond du Lac, Wis., in 1867; andanother co-operative enterprise was started at Black Hawk, Wis., in 1870.Several ventures were made, too, in California, Mr. Wentworth of Alvaradosecuring the assistance of Bonesteel and Otto in 1870; and the next yearthey produced 1,000,000 pounds of sugar. Amherst Agricultural College,the Virginia University, and other institutions and individuals, have experi-mented. Sorghum, or the Chinese-cane, was introduced into this country by theBureau of Agriculture in 1856.
