coal and coke trade inQueensland; and the Government Railway Workshops, employing 800 men, aresituated there. The city also possesses two iron foundries, where rolling-stockand general engineering work are turned out; and woollen, cotton, and soapfactories. Although a good deal of the timber in the West Moreton has beenworked out, considerable reserves yet remain, and over a score of sawmillsare kept busily employed. Originally a huge pastoral district, a largeproportion of it has come under the plough, and it is now recognised as oneof the richest agricultural provinces in the State. One of the largest industriesin the district is that of pig-raising, which, since the establishment of dairying, has assumed very considerable proportions. Near Gatton is situated the State Agricultural College, under the manage-ment of experts. It is a Government institution, established with a view toafford facilities for the dissemination of practical and scientific information 6 IPSWICH AND BUNDANBA.

IPSWICH AND BUNDANBA. on general farming subjects. The subdivision and opening for settlement ofmany large grazing properties by the Government has given a great impetusto agriculture. Few of the old stations now remain, and these must in courseof time be subdivided for settlement. West Moreton is above all things thehome of the agriculturist, and small farms abound throughout the district;nevertheless, grazing is extensively carried on in those parts over which thewave of close settlement has not yet swept, and some of the finest drafts of fatcattle which supply the Brisbane markets, and some of the best types ofhorses to be found in Queensland, are bred on its rich pastures. River System. The district is magnificently watered by the Brisbane, Stanley, Bremer, and Lockyer rivers and their tributary creeks. The Brisbane River risesin the Cooyar Range in the north-west, and flows south-easterly to itsjunction near Caboonbah with the Stanley, which from its source aboveCrohamhurst runs sIpswichAndBundamba
