The stream of Greeks andMussulmen from the Levant, now pours in unchecked, and the temples of all confessionsstand peacefully near to one another. The chief point of interest in the town is, of course,the port, from whence is obtained the best view of the singular situation of Trieste. Hereone seems to see the confluence of those many streams which bring riches to it, and herebegins the wonderful Canal Grande, which carries ships of heavy burden right into thecentre of the town. The origin of the harbour dates from shortly after the beginning ofthe Thirty Years War, although at first it was merely a basin fit to receive small barks.The present colossal erections belong to this century. The lighthouse, which stands onthe extreme point of Santa Teresa, was built in 1834. Without doubt, the finest point in the interior of the town is the Piazza della Borsa,and that is characteristic of Trieste
