These and many another proud name we hear, for there were onceno fewer than twenty-three flourishing populous cities in the Campagna. But truly this ishard to believe, when the bearers of these proud names are pointed out to us at thepresent day, a few grey, wretched groups of houses, whose inhabitants are lost in the widewilderness, and leave no trace behind. On leaving the green belt of gardens that girdle Rome, where elm and vine stillgreet us cheerfully above the walls, a brief pilgrimage brings us into the midst of a house-less solitude. No cheerful villages nestle close to the ancient mother. Lapped for longcenturies in the pious luxury of ecclesiastical splendour, lazy, loveless, she has let herchildren perish of famine,—she has murdered them !
