ina oxide.. 14.54Alkalies The Shepherdstown cement had a tensile strength neatwithout sand of 50 pounds in one day and 300 pounds in 28days, and was slow setting. Its strength was equal to the bestgrades made in this country. Quarry.—The cement rock forms a bold bluff along thePotomac River across the county road from the mill. Thelimestone belongs to the Elbrook Formation and stands nearlyvertical with a height of 125 feet. The quarry-face is 57 feetacross, but 15 feet is rejected as too pure for Natural cement.At one place is a six-foot ledge which burned to a hard clinkerand so was not used and was named by the quarrymen thegreen rock. The exposure of vertical cliff runs for a mile andcontains rock of varying composition in the different ledges,so that only certain portions could be used for this cement.
