In 1833 Chicago was incorporated with a pop-ulation of 3000. The first telegram was received in Chicagoin 1848. The Illinois Michigan Canal which opened the firstwater transportation between the Great Lakes and the Mis- CHICAGO A CONVENTION CITY 2sr> sissippi was completed in 1848. This year marks the be-ginning of railroad transportation—The Galena and Chi-cago Union. In 1839 Chicago had its first great fire with aloss of $75,000.00—ten years later the greatest storm andflood in its history destroyed many buildings, vessels,wharfs, etc. Later in the year of 1849 the second big fireoccurred. In 1857 the third destructive fire occurred inwhich there was an estimated loss of over $250,000.00. Thefourth and greatest fire in Chicago was in 1871.
