Il primo villaggio dAmalfi verso ovest è Tovere, in luogo montuosoe di accesso malagevole. Una cinquantina di case, disseminate sul declivio di un monte,ricettano circa duecento persone che vivono collagricoltura, la caccia e i lavori al tornioa somiglianza della non lontana Salerno. Aria secca e fresca destate, rigida nel verno,ma sempre salubre. Presso Tovere, sul confine comunale verso il mare, Vettica Minore, il villaggiopiù pittoresco di Amalfi, villeggiatura, sin dai tempi dei duchi Piccolomini, dei signoriamalfitani che vi hanno sempre amene ville specchiantisi nel mare sottostante. Vet-tica non ha industria propria, mentre in addietro la manifattura di calze sericheprocacciava lauti guadagni agli abitanti, i quali vivono ora poveramente del tagliodei boschi, della fabbricazione del carbon
