Mais les malheurs de la fin du regne nepermirent pas de donner suite aux bonnes intentions du roi.Dans les annees qui suivent, la correspondance ecliangee entreles Sulpiciens de Montreal et ceux de France revient a clia-que instant sur le Canal de la Chine. Au cours de Pannee 1717, M. Chaussegros de Lerv, inge-nieur militaire et civil de Montreal, fait un releve de rou-vrage quil trouve aux trois quarts acheve. Seize ans plustard, en 1733, il presente un nouveau rapport, cette fois ac-compagne de plans et dun devis estimatif. Loriginal de la(arte dressee par lui doit exister quelque part au Canada; onen trouvera ici une reproduction prise sur une copie qui eslentre les mains de M. Nous donnons egalement une au-tre carte plus detaillee, dressee par Nicholas Bellin(b)et que M.le juge Girouard a fait entrer dans son precieux ouvrageLake St. Louis old and new. Le projet primitif devait avoir ete profondement modifie etil est probable que le canal maintenant projete devait etrepourvu decluses et avoir des dimensions plus grandes. Ladepense, en effet, se serait elevee a 255,000 livres. Ce fut lecoup de grace de Fentreprisa. A partir de ce moment, les ma-nuscrits du Seminaire nen font plus mention. II est a pre-sumer, neanmoins, que le travail fait par Gedeon de Oatalognene fut pas entierement perdu; au printemps, le Saint-Laurentdevait mettre assez d?eau dans la tranchee ouverte entre le lacSaint-Louis et la lac Saint-Pierre pour permettre aux canotsdy circuler.
