x avaient doneune longueur de 1700 pieds et leurs cinq ecluses rachetaientune chute totale de 15 pieds environ. Cest peu quand onsonge que la devinellation dun lac a lautre nest pas infe-rieure a 84 pieds. Commences en 1779, ces canaux etaientacheves en 1783. Les notes laissees par le capitaine Twiss donnent une assezbonne idee des travaux executes sous sa direction. On entrouve dabondants extraits, dune lecture tres interessante,dans le rapport de Tarchiviste du Dominion, annee lSSfi, pp.21-24. On ne fut pas longtemps sans sapercevoir que ^emplacementdes deux canaux daval avait ete mal choisi. Tous les printemps,a la debacle, leurs jetees dapproche souffraient considerable-mant du choc des glaces charrices par les eaux gonflees dufleuve. Aussi, des avant 1800, on avait etudie les modifications (*) On ne saurait dire aujourdhui si ce fort a ete construit avant ou apres17G0, mais son plan general est bien dans la maniere de Vauban. IMS ORIGINES DES CANAUX DU CANADA 13 a faire a tout le systeme. Le nouveau projet presente par lecolonel Gother Mann, en cette derniere annee, pent se resumerainsi:—porter de 6 a 9 ^ pieds Pouverture des portes des eclu£es des deux canaux damont, elargir de 4 pieds le sas deces ecluses et de 2 pieds la cunette de chacun des deux canauxet doubler le mouillage, cest-a-dire, dl % pied, le portera 3 pieds. Quant aux canaux du Trou-du-Moulin et de laFaucille, on les remplacait par un canal unique, evitant dunseul coup les deux rapides et debouchant dans 1Ottawa. Voicidu reste un extrait du rapport du colonel Gother Mann. Entre )e cours deau qui descend de la Grande-Riviere(lOttawa) et la riviere Cataraqui (St-Laurent) setend unelangue de terre dont la conformation est tres favorable a Peta-blissement dun canal de toute securite. Lentree daval de cecanal se trouverait sur la Grande-Kiviere, a quelque 900 yardsdes Cascades et son entree superieure, a peu pres a la memedistance a Pamont du
