et completait la route fluviale directe entre Montrealet Kingston, les canaux de Lachine, de Carillon, de la Chute-a-Blondeau, de Grenville et du Rideau, ayant ete ouverts a la cir-culation de 1826 a 1833. Vers lepoque ou le gouvernement imperial dAngleterre fai-sait construire les canaux militaires, cest-a^dire ceux qui se-chelonnent entre Montreal et Kingston, il entreprenait aussitout une serie de petits ouvrages analogues dans Pancienne pro-vince du Haut-Canada, pendant que deux compagnies differen-tes abordaient, lune la canalisation du Richelieu a Chambly,lautre celle du Saint-Laurent a Welland. Ce serait sortir ducadre de cet article que de faire lhistoire, meme tres abregee, deces diverses entreprises. De 1798 h 1802, eelle desdeux factions dans laquelle etaient restes les plus anciens ac-tionnaires du groupe primitif, construisit ici, en territoire cana-dien, le petit canal en question.
