Mary Carpenter offers a poem (which she copied on pages three and four of this letter). The poem was written by a deceased minister and given to Mary Carpenter by his widow for publication in the Liberty Bell. The poem is five stanzas in length and is entitled "Lines written Aug. 1st 1838, when Slavery ceased in the British West India Isles," and has the initials J.M. for the author
