thatone Mexican laborer is worth as much as two orthree negro laborers. That is, the Mexican will domuch more work in a day than the negro. Every-thing here seems high to us unless we stop to con-sider the value on the silver basis, which islittle more than half of ours. Our hotel bill was fourdollars a day each, at Monterey, in silver. This isvery inconvenient and heavy to carry. I had bothcoat pockets full, that I got for a $20 bill (atLaredo) of our money, but it melted away like icethe next day under the silver rays of a Mexicansun. Mr. Peters, who is a nephew of Mrs. FrankShively and Mrs. Charles Campbell, of Canton,is in business here, has been about sevenyears, and likes the place for business very much.He kindly showed us the places of interest in thecity and it was an interesting treat. But themost interesting sights are the houses, the quaintold streets and the people of every shade andhue that fill them everywhere. The many oldhouses are built of stone and plaster, on the out-side as well as the inside; built to the streetsedge, seldom over one story high and usually with-out windows. The better class of old residenthouses are entered through a door leading to aninner court where, in this tropical climate, theyspend a greater part of their time. The fronts ofthe houses bordering on the streets have theirdoors where one would think the windows shouldbe. But all are barred with iron grates except theone leading into the court, and at night they are leftopen for circulation—the bars to keep out intruders.The one door leading to the court is closed andsecurely locked at night.
