I must not forget to mention Karnak, near thetown of Luxor, although now much ruined, itonce was the largest and greatest temple ofThebes. Nearly four thousand years ago thisgreat edifice stood in all its beauty. It must havebeen a grand sight with its avenue lined by twohundred enormous statues leading to the temple,and many others with porticos and archways lead-ing in every direction from this wonderful struct-ure. A glorious portal opens into a vast courtcrowded with a perfect forest of the most mag^nifi-cent columns covered with hieroglyphics, and richlypainted. But now forty centuries have come andgone; time has dimmed its beauty and ages havebeen leveling it down.
