a glass whichcut off all the heat rays, but very littlelight. Other glasses which he made cutoff all the ultra-violet rays, which werevery injurious to the eyes, but scarcelyimpeded the luminous rays. He believedthat some of these glasses were perfectin reducing glare from the sun, whitecliffs, and from the snow in Switzerland.He hoped that illuminating engineerswould continue these researches, and suc-ceed in producing a method of illumina-tion which would yield a more substantialproportion of the valuable luminous rays,but would suppress those that were uselessor prejudicial. Sir Henry Trueman Wood (Secretaryof the Royal Society of Arts) remarkedthat whereas Sir William Crookes housewas the first to be lighted by electricity,he believed the Royal Society of Artspremises was the first public buildingto be permanently lighted by electricity,and it continued with tlial form of lightingup to the present time.
