MOUNT MACDONALD 397 largest are only about eight feet high and six feetsquare, while the smallest are mere dolls houses. The highest hill in the Territory is the central peakof the Macdonald Range, in the South District. TheChinese name of the hill is Cheng-chi or Cho-chiShan. Here there are half a dozen or more shrinesto the various deities mentioned, each containingsmall stone images and stone incense-burners. Justbelow the summit is an old stone slab with an almostillegible inscription relating to Heaven and Earth,and close by is a shrine to the Mother-dragon. Theimages are all weather-worn and have an appearanceof antiquity which is perhaps deceptive, though theyare probably much older than their stone canopies,which—as is stated on several mural tablets—havebeen restored at various times during the presentdynastic period, beginning in 1644. Besides theshrines there is also a small bell-house containing aniron bell dated Hsien Feng X (i860), and close by arethe unrecognisable
