In the largervillages may be seen theatrical pavilions in front ofsome of the local temples, and these pavilions areoften the most elaborate buildings, as regardsarchitectural structure and ornament, in their re-spective neighbourhoods. The Weihaiwei Territory contains, as alreadystated, about three hundred and fifteen villages andhamlets. Estimating the total area of the Territoryat three hundred square miles, and allowing for alarge hill-area of uncultivated barren land, we findthat there are probably about three villages, on anaverage, to every two square miles of territory. Nocensus has yet been taken, but the population waslong ago estimated by the military authorities (whenthey surveyed the territory) at 500 to the squaremile, which would give a total of close on 150,000.I am inclined to think this estimate was too highat the time it was made, though the present population,which has been steadily increasing during the last1 See pp. 262 seg.
