The stops made were asfollows: Painesville, Ashtabula, Erie,Brocton Junction, Dunkirk and ErieCrossing at Buffalo. The train consistedof two express cars, one postal, one bag-gage, one smoker, two coaches, twosleeping and one dining car—total, tencars. During the trip in two instances a speedof 75 miles per hour was reached, in oneinstance 78 miles per hour, one distance87 miles per hour, one instance 77 milesper hour and one instance 66 miles perhour. The ashpit is usually an eyesore aroundany round-house, and the continual dump-ing and cleaning, or partial cleaning, takesmore time than many imagine, besidesnever being really clean. The arrangementat the Meadow shops of the PennsylvaniaRailroad, patterned after the one at Al-toona, is a very neat and efficient device,which seems worthy of being more gen-erally adopted. The illustrations give a fair idea of thegeneral arrangement, which is beside thesand-house, just outside the round-houseat this place. The bridge spans the dumping trackand another beside it. which holds thecars for carrying the ashes away. Theright-hand view shows the cars, or buck-ets, which rest on four-wheel trucks in thepit. be raised double thi di tani e by means ofthe sheave wheel and rope shown, whichdoubles the travel of the ropi The traverse cylinder is of wrought-iron pipe, with an internal diameter of 7^4inch
