One of (lie most efficient sub-depart-ments of the Government is that whichdeals with the transportation of the mailsover railroads. From a report of thegeneral superintendent of the RailwayMail Department for the year endingJune, 1896, we find that the total numberof full post-office cars was 778. The Post-Office Department has been urging foryears that the cars carrying mail shouldbe equipped with all the appliances neces-sary for securing safety, and the reportintimates that great progress had beenmade during the last year. About 27 percent, of the cars are equipped with thePintsch light, which the department fa-vors as the best and safest light that hasbeen tried, and 40 per cent, of the cars areheated by steam.
