It has been notorious for years that rail-road companies in this country are badlyimposed on by the owners of private carlines. By some means or other nearly allthese lines manage to get a great deal oftheir repairs done by the railroad com-panies free of charge, and the cars of pri-vate lines are notorious for having suchmechanism as air brake and couplers inbad order. The same state of things ap-pears to exist to a great extent in GreatBritain, for at a meeting of the RoyalCommission in England, where cars andcar mechanism were under discussion,Mr. Acworth, a well-known lawyer, madethe point that, according to the Board ofTrade figures, private owners cars failednearly twice as much as the railway com-panies cars, and so led to many moreaccidents.
