or cantsare fed into it. When kept operating to capacity a vertical resaw willsplit from 150,000 to 200,000 board feet of 2-inch planks into 1-inchboards in a ten-hour shift. An 8-foot resaw requires from 100 to150 horse-power to drive it. The chief advantage of a vertical resaw in a mill is that the outputof the mill can be increased at a relatively low cost per thousand boardfeet. The head-saw, by cutting thick stock, can handle a greaternumber of logs and resawing on a vertical resaw can be done cheaperthan on a head-saw because a smaller crew is needed, and with theexception of the sawyer, the laborers may be unskilled. A twin-band vertical resaw is sometimes employed for planing millservice where thin box material is desired. This type has two sets ofwheels mounted tandem on one frame, both saws being fed by the samefeed rolls. It is equipped with a device by means of which the distancebetween saws can be varied, in order to cut stock of different thickness. 94 SAWMILL EQUIPMENT

RESAWING MILLS 95 A battery of vertical band resaws is used in some Pacific Coastmills, any number of saws up to six being arranged one behind theother, each saw being a separate unit, but so mounted that a lateraladjustment can be made which makes it possible to saw stock of dif-ferent thicknesses. The Horizontal Band Resaw. The horizontal band resaw is used most frequently in planing millsfor resawing short stock and also in sawmills to resaw heavy slabsand small logs which have been split by the head-saw. One makeof horizontal resaw is shown in Fig. 69. In the type illustrated,
