Small good—only needless aggravationof their sorrows—would it have been to lash thosewoe-begone ones. So the postilion confined himself toflourishing the whip gaily and incessantly, as thescarlet post-wagen rattled over Frankforts stonystreets, brandishing the stock above his head, makingthe lash gyrate in concentric circles—(and in some-what unpleasant proximity to the faces of the outsidepassengers)—and producing a most astounding seriesof cracking reverberations. The stout gentlemancompared them to fireworks, and aflected to be ableto distinguish between catharine-wheels and Eomancandles; the man with the iron chest shamelesslyavowed himself to be in an agony of terror ; and theslim gentleman (who was in the box-seat—the otherswere behind) prudently pulled his hat over his brow,and shielded his face
