Theplate represents a division of the pelvis from beforebackward, cutting through the middle of the vagina,but leaving the bladder, womb, and rectum entire. 324. The illustration will make it apparent howprolapsus uteri or falling of the womb produces bear-ing down pains, and interferes with the discharges ofthe urine and feces by pressure upon the urethra andrectum. It will also explain the nature of retroversion Explanation of Plate IV. See opposite page. — A. Pubis orfront bone at the point of division, called by anatomists thesymphysis pubis. (For the bony structure of the pelvis, seeplate I. p. 15.) B. Spine or back bone cut through the centre.C. Portion of the right thigh. D. One of the nates or rightbuttock. E. Bladder, somewhat distended, rising behind thepubis. F. Urethra or canal leading from the bladder. G.Rectum. H. Anus. K. Vagina. L. Womb or Uterus, withits neck and mouth protruding into the vagina.

•i MANUAL OF DIRECTIONS, ETC. 141 of the womb, in which its top or fundus is thrown backupon the rectum, and its mouth forward upon theurethra, or bladder, interfering with the evacuation ofthe bowels, and giving rise to great distension of thebladder. This accident, it may be remarked, usuallyhappens aboutthe third month of pregnancy, or afterchildbirth, before the womb has had time to returnto its natural size. Hence the importance, after de-livery, of remaining a week or more in the horizontalposition. 325. Vagina. This is the canal or passage lead-ing to the womb, as shown in the plate. In the adultfemale it is five or six inches long, and terminated atits upper extremity by the womb, the neck of whichit encircles. The lower portion of it is connectedwith the rectum behind, and the bladder and urethrain front. 326. Womb or Uterus.
