After all is said, the new education, in the teaching of thesubject, has passed beyond the mere microscopic accuracy ofchronological tables, and would grasp something of the philosophyof history. An old German proverb says, What goes into the mindthrough the eyes never comes out again. It is to such associa-tions of the concrete in teaching that the old Moravian school-master, Comenius, appealed when he gave to the world his * OrbisPictus. In our study of the state of Pennsylvania we shall be some-what arbitrary in our separation of the events into time-periods,although we have taken up four periods which were best suited toour own class-work. We would not in any way limit the seriesof maps to the four here given, and could wish these to be takenrather as suggestions than as models.
