BIRTH OF THE TELEPHONE in the human ear. This was stretched tightto form a sort of drum, and an armature ofmagnetized iron was fastened to its middle.Thus the bit of iron was free to vibrate, andopposite it was an electro-magnet throughwhich flowed the current that passed over theline. This acted as the receiver. At theother end of the wire was a sort of crudeharmonica with a clock spring, reed, and mag-net. Bell and Watson had been workingupon their crude apparatus for months, andfinally, on June 2d, sounds were actuallytransmitted. Bell was afire with enthusiasm;the first great step had been taken. Theelectric current had carried sound-vibrationsalong the wire and had reproduced them.If this could be done a telephone whichwould reproduce whole words and sentencescould be attained.
