ordiaphragm which would vibrate when thesound-waves of the voice were thrown againstit. Behind this were mounted various kindsof electro-magnets in series with the electrifiedwire over which the inventor hoped to sendhis messages. For three years they laboredwith this apparatus, trying every conceivablesort of disk. It is easy to pass over thosethree years, filled as they were with unceasingtoil and patient effort, because they were drabyears when little of interest occurred. Butthese were the years when Bell and Watsonwere going to school, learning how to applyelectricity to this new use, striving to maketheir apparatus talk. How dreary and tryingthese years must have been for the experi-menters we may well imagine. It requiresno slight force of will to hold oneself tosuch a task in the face of failure afterfailure. By June of 1875 Bell had completed a newinstrument. In this the diaphragm was apiece of gold-beaters skin, which Bell hadselected as most closely resembling the drum 160
