device of Irish warfare, broke theirranks by driving among them a number ofhorses and cattle. The garrison were thusdriven back into the town, where the loyalportion of the inhabitants stoutly supportedthem, and after a gallant resistance were finallydriven through the burning streets and fled toWexford, some fourteen miles distant. An officer of the army, who was present at En-niscorthy as a boy and subsequently at the storm-ing of San Sebastian, said that the two sceneswere similar. The loss of life at Enniscorthy wasvery great, three officers and eighty men of thegarrison, besides many of the inhabitants, havingfallen. No less ^ Musgraves Memoirs.

In a militarypoint of view Vinegar Hill is strong. Highgrounds, gradually rising, are crowned by acone of bold ascent; while the country beneath, being cultivated fields, is divided into numerousenclosures, and intersected by stone walls, hedges, and trenches. On the apex of the hill stoodthe ruins of a windmill, and round the upperheight some rude field-works were thrown up,as well as on a lower ridge which the rebelsoccupied as part of their position.
