Die heutige geogmphische Verbreitung der Tiere ist das Resultat verschierlenartiger Faktoren der Vor-und Jetztzeit, die eine langsame, aber stetige Ande-rung der Zusammensetzung der Tierwelt eines Landesvernrsachen. Die Zoogeographie hat daher nicht nurdie Zusammensetzung der Tierwelt in den einzelnenTeilen der P>de zn konstatieren, sondern sie mufi dieGrunde fur die heutige Verbreitung der Tiere zu fin-den suchen. Die heutige Verbreitung der Landtiere gestattetnach dem Vorgang von Sclater und Wallace, im Hin-blick auf die Verteilung der Saugetiere und Vogel,die Zerlegung der Erde in grofie tiergeographischeBegionen, deren Begrenzung sich freilich verschiedengestaltet je nach den zugrunde gelegten Tiergruppen.Der faunistische Charakter der einzelnen Regionengeht Hand in Hand mit den physikalischen Eigen-tiimlichkeiten derselben.
