slocation of marine transport and theattendant shortage of fuel have been taken into consideration, the results are satisfactory. The diminution in the output ofcopper has, of course, seriously affected the total value of theStates production for the year, towards which iron ore for thefirst time makes the largest contribution. The value of the ironore produced would have been larger, but for the same inter-fering causes that affected the copper production. Of the non-metallic minerals the production has been, on thewhole, maintained, and the value of the precious opal raised hasincreased materially. The Chief Registrar and Recorder has visited Iron Knob andHummock Hill, and prepared an account of the welfare workcarried out by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company in theinterests of its employees. This report supplements those alreadypublished with regard to the similar work that has been carriedout at Port Pirie, Wallaroo, and Moonta. March 27thj 1920. L. KEITH WARD, Director of Mines.
