The result was that feeble old men faced prospects of a coldnight, possible1 sickness and death, for lack of protection, andthere was some tall hustling at the headquarters tent of therented City. The appeal to Mobile citizens was responded toin a. way, but the demand was greater than this response couldmeet. Mayor Lyons was called to the rescue in the name ofMobile. The answer was that the city would supply ;100 blanketsand that they would be at Monroe Park by night Fall. Theycame, but they were not enough, and more must be had to-day. Over 1,000 veterans had registered for sleeping quarters intents by () oclock. Many of them finding that blankets had notboon provided, came back to the city, some to purchase beddingand return, others to seek quarters whore bedding could be hadfor the price—and some of them complained of a disposition tomake the price pretty high. 18 Twentieth Reunion, Mobile, Ala., April26, 27and28, 1910. Tented City, though they came faster than had been bargainedon. That is, they came faster in spots. Estimates were basedon answers to inquiries sent out. Some of the returns did notmatch the answers. Mississippi, for instance, sent notice thatit would have 200 veterans to be looked after. Instead, nearer400 came. The result was that Mississippi overflowed. Theonly thing: was to put the Mississippians in quarters reservedfor other States. Many of them were turned into TexasStreet, and things seemed to be going well enough until Texasitself appeared late in the afternoon to claim its own. Everything was all right at the Tented City except the sizeof it and the weather, but the force at headquarters tried to meetadverse conditions and did xvvy well. At 5 oclock full 100 oldveterans stood in line waiting to register, get their assignmentsand their meal coupons; it was getting close to the meal hour andthe sun was going- down. Nat
