That the Navy of the United States, in point of speed andfine sea qualities, has been left behind in the voyage of nauticalimprovement by the genius of individual enterprise, is not thefault of American ship-builders. On the contrary, to the honorof mercantile ambition and intelligence, the field of commercialoperations has presented by far the largest measure of usefulnessto the aspiring architect; and it is no wonder that the talentedand active of this profession are now found almost exclusivelywithin the orbit of peaceful mechanism.
