e Breton.It is homespun for him even though the rest ofFrance may be arrayed in silks. He has workedout an existence against great odds and it hasgiven him a character and physique which makeshim notable among his fellow countrymen. These features are also characteristics of theNormandy folk, but to a less degree. Theyhave prospered more than their Breton brothers,their lands yield them easier and greater harvests,and they are a little closer in touch with theworld outside. But, taking them both side byside, they outmeasure in every point of compari-son their brothers in corresponding walks of lifein the rest of France. One no sooner crosses into Brittany than thechange in the topography is noticeable. As youproceed westward toward Brest (a trip which wedid not make) there are long stretches of uninter-esting road, the country growing more and morerugged and barren as you approach this greatshoulder of France, which braces itself against theravages and mighty tides of the Atlantic. 72
