Thus armed and disguised, as soon as my friendhad left I sallied forth alone. It was just in the dusk ofthe evening as I walked up Commercial street towardKearney, on my way to the Mission. I passed several *Tlic following is taken from the IJr-roM of May 28th :KuMORS.—Yesterday, Jlerchant street was closely watched through-out the entire day. It was thought by the Vigilance Committee thatKdward McGowan was somewhere concealed in that neighl)orhood,and therefore every person that was known to be intimate with himwas watched wherever he went. Vigilance Committee.—Everything was quiet around the Com-mittee rooms yesterday. Matters remain in the same condition to-day. Late last evening word was communicated that Ned McGowanwas seen to go into the building at the corner of Sutter and Kearnystreets, where he had a room. A portion of the Committee soon af-ter surrounded the building, and early this morning a thorough searchwas instituted, but he could not be found.—Bulletin, June 2d.

I could not forget in athousand centuries the feeling of mingled hope and horrorwith which I walked that evening an unjustly outlawedman through the hosts of my enemies. It was not the fear of death itself that made thesemoments terrible, for deatU I could face, and had facedbefore. But it was the thought of such a death as awaitedme in the event of my capture, and the reflection that myr-iads of tongnes would ring into the ears of my childrenhow ignobly their father died, but none would tell them howunjustly.
