I had lost my over-coat and waistcoat theprevious day as before mentioned, and suffered greatly forthe want of them. I may as well here state that in thepocket of the over-coat were all my papers of a privatenature, but fortunately they fell into the hands of Don An-tonio Maria de la Guerra, Mayor of Santa Barbara, andbrother of the present Senator, through whose kindnessthey have been restored to me. Among these papers w^ereletters to the different Missions in lower California andMexico, stating that I was a good Catholic, and not travel-ling through those countries on any political errand.
