I did not much like to start on a Friday, inasmuchas it was hangmans or Vigilante day ; and I have neverbeen entirely free from superstition. However, as thejourney was not properly to commence until the followingday, I overcame my scruples, and prepared for the start.My friend called early in the evening to inform me thatall was arranged, and the horses, together with a guide whohad been provided, (James Dennison,) and a companion,were in waiting at the Mission Dolores, so that all I hadto do was to go there, mount and ride for life.
