ilable.Prior to the fire of 1904 the City owned little wharfproperty of importance. The fire made it possible to acquireall of the burned district fronting on the harbor (about 4,000lineal feet). The City purchased the property, removed allbuildings, streets, etc., and laid cut a system of public wharvesand docks along Pratt street. These are situated In the upperharbor and are Intended for the coastwise and bay trade. Thetransatlantic steamers, at present, find ample accommodationsat the railroad piers in the lower harbor. Pier 4, at the foot of Market Place, is 150 feet wide.Along Market Place the City has erected three handsome,commodious buildings, a retail market, a fish market, a whole-sale market, all within a stones throw of Pier 4, which Is setapart for trie use of the market boats. A two-story recreation pier at the foot of Broadway wascompleted early in 1914. The lower floor of this structure isto be used for commercial purposes; the upper section for arecreation center. 25
