^softer than the song of the wood thrush. My search revealedtwo nests, one on the ground at the base of a bush and theother a beautiful nest of bark strips, stems, and moss placedon a fallen bough three feet from the ground and concealedby overhanging ferns and vines. The nests are usuallyto be found among the leaves on the ground in tangledmasses of briars, and quite frequently situated on smallhummocks. The latter nest contained four deep blueeggs. This is probably the most southern record for thewillow thrush. Minnesota and the provinces of Canadais the summer home of this retiring bird.

J THRUSHES 455 THE ALICES THRUSH* Alices Thrush, or the Gray-cheeked Thrush, has anextensive range covering the whole of North America fromthe Atlantic Coast westward to the plains nnd northwardto the regions beyond the Arctic Circle, and is abundantalong the Arctic Coast. From its breeding-grounds innorthern North America, on the approach of winter, itmigrates southward to Central America. Alices thrush is a shy bird during the nesting periodand remains within the friendly shelter of thickets, and,though unseen, their lowest sweet song is frequentlyheard. Mr. Ridgway says: The notes are said to bequite distinctive, the song being most like that of the hermitthrush, but differs in being its exact inverse, beginningwith its highest and concluding with its lowest notes, insteadof the reverse. Its nests are usually placed in shrubs or low branchingtrees at a height of but two to seven feet from the ground,and in a few instances it has been known to nest on theground. The nest is us
