The premises seem to have contained a well ofsome repute, the site of which is clearly marked in the con-veyances of this property, and which may, indeed, still existunder the Old Cotton Exchange which at the present daycovers Abraham Clocks modest holding, — house-site, gar-den, and all. This well was at the right of the entrance tothe modern building, upon Hanover Square, and about eigh-teen feet back from the street line. Of Abraham Clock, but little is known; he was livinghere as late as 1664, but died within a few years after thatdate. One of the trials of his humble life at this spot wasthat his plot of ground was subject to the encroachments ofthe waves at high tides. Later, in 1672, when his widow,Tryntje, had been ordered to fill out the street, or Waal, infront of her premises, and also the hollow way upon the east,she declared herself unable to have the work done; and themagistrates of the city decided to render her special aid, asshe has so much to do.
