As a result of this work, the Guadalupe rangeis supporting many hundreds of additional head of cattle. To the sportsman or naturalist, the most interestingfeature of the Lincoln Forest is the small herd of moun-tain sheep that survive in some of the rugged escarpmentsof the Guadalupes. The Forest Rangers, the State au-thorities, and the New Mexico Game Protective Associa-tion are making a united effort to enforce the law protect-ing these sheep, in the hope that they will increase andeventually restock the other ranges of the State wherethey were formerly abundant. The Carson National Forest is an area of large eco-nomic importance, and of intense and varied interest.Its comparatively ample rainfall and heavy winter snowsgive rise to many streams which form a part of the head-waters of the Rio Grande and San Juan Rivers. Its tim-ber resources are of considerable magnitude, the totalstand being estimated as a billion and a quarter board feetof lumber, and over seven hundred thousand cords ofwood. These timber resources are in process of rapiddevelopment, and at present supply active sawmills withthe material for their operation.
