17 History of the New York Nursery and Childs Hospital HE work now carried on by the New York Nursery andChilds Hospital, succeeding to all the activities and to allthe traditions of the oldest nursery, the oldest childs hospi-tal, and the oldest maternity hospital in the City of NewYork, which sent doctors to the homes of the poor at thetime of childbirth, was begun in 1823. The present corporation wasformed by the consolidation of the Nursery and Childs Hospital withthe New York Infant Asylum, which had formerly consolidated withthe old Marion Street Maternity Hospital. Each of these institutionswas a pioneer in its particular line of endeavor. The old Marion Street Maternity Hospital was organized in 1823and incorporated in 1827 as The New York Female Asylum for Lying-in Women and was so called for the next seventy years. Its object was:To furnish comfortable conditions and skillful attendance to respectablemarried women who require an asylum during the period of their con-finement
