rating room. We have affiliations with the following hospitals, from whom wereceive pupil nurses: Laura Franklin, New York City. St. Josephs,Yonkers. Taunton State, Taunton, Mass. North Hudson, Weehawken. Kings Park State, Kings Park, N.Y. Binghamton, Binghamton. Asylum Department.—The asylum consists of three wards. Thesewards are for the use of homeless mothers and their babies. At thepresent time we have 15 mothers and 13 babies. After delivery homelessmothers and their babies are admitted to the different wards of thisdepartment. The purpose of the asylum is to try and keep motherand babe together. The period for staying is indefinite dependinglargely upon the conduct of the mother. Some of the mothers havebeen with us for from two to three years. After the babies are threemonths old we pay each mother a small monthly wage, so that shemay have a little money to start on when she leaves us. To earn this allwomen admitted to this department have certain duties assigned to them. 15

16 The Outdoor Obstetrical Department is conducted for the purposeof assisting women who require the services of a doctor and nurse dur-ing confinement in their own homes, but are not able to pay for attend-ance. This Department has grown rapidly in importance and has be-come one of the chief activities of the Hospital. The doctors, three in number, are on call day and night for deliveries,and see the patients every day until discharged which is usually on theninth or tenth day if the case is normal. During the school year thestaff men are assisted by students from the College of Physicians andSurgeons on 59th Street. Three graduate nurses are assigned to dutyin this department. In our Childrens Department, occupying the entire roof, seventhfloor, a large ward on the fifth floor and at times some beds in the quar-antine building, there is never a dull minute, never a time when thereis not something to be done for some one or more of the babies—in fact,there are times when it seems t
