ul in design with its quantities of white columns, andbearing large, ornamental tablets of dedication by the Government.There were extensive logias, where people might sit, wishing to beholdthe entrancing scene of night illumination. Along this shore, therewas 1,900 feet of bulkhead to hold a fill between it and the originalshore line. The piers proper consisted of two reinforced concrete retainingwalls supported on round and inclined sheet spiles. The piers wereconnected at the water end by an arch, the largest ever attemptedin concrete. The height of this span allowed boats to steam beneath,and every part of the work was decorative. At night, it was definedby strings of electric lamps, and the high towers at either end of thearch were similarly outlined. These towers served as a wirelessstation, the demonstration of which was explained to visitors as apart of the Governments exhibit.
