es a glimpse of thestately edifices with which the street is lined. Passing Trinity Churchyard we notice the immensebrick building which forms its upper boundary. Thisis the headquarters of the coal trade, not only of thecity, but of a large portion of the Union, and herefortunes are made and lost by wise or unwise dealingsin black diamonds. Insurance offices now begin tomultiply on both sides of the street, and on the rightwe notice the superb structure of the Equitable LifeInsurance Company, above which is the marble build-ing of the Mutual Life. These are very Towers ofBabel, and dwarf the neighboring structures, which arethemselves buildings of large proportions. On the left,at the corner of Dey street, the tall tower of theWestern Union Telegraph Company rears its loftyhead, and from it a bewildering network of wiresstretches away in all directions, high overhead, and look-ing like a gigantic spiders web drawn against the sky.Across the way, at the corner of Fulton street, is the

Next door is the HeraldBuilding, also of white marble, in which is published theKing of American Dailies, the world-famous New YorkHerald, Opposite these two buildings, on the westside of Broadway, occupying the entire block fromFulton to Vesey streets, is St. Pauls churchyard, withits rows of crumbling tombstones.
