CHAPTER II. ARRIVAL OP THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CORNWALLAND YORK. On Wednesday morning, October 23d, at 7 oclock, theroyal yacht «Ophir» and her escorts, entered the narrows, andsteamed slowly up the harbor to the positions that had beenassigned them by Commodore Giffard, of H. M. S. «Charybdis,»the «Ophir» berthing at the coastal wharf of Messrs. A. J.Harvey & Co., the «Niobe,» « Diadem,» «Cresent,» and « Proser-pine » anchoring in the harbor. As soon as the ships appearedin the offing, a royal salute was fired from Fort Townshend, andas they entered the harbor, the bells of the Roman CatholicCathedral rang out a merry peal of joy, while thousands ofvoices from piers and hillsides mingled in the glad welcome.Before an hour had elapsed the city and harbor were brilliantin a profusion of bunting.
