of snow and ice, but now is known as oneof the worlds granaries. Similarly Newfoundland hasfarming possibilities to which the leading agriculturalauthorities of the Dominion do justice. The farm-lands here lie in belts, mainly in thevalleys through which the principal rivers run, or aroundthe heads of the great bays, and are capable of supportinga population many times as great as that which nowoccupies the Island. This statement might be consideredoverdrawn, but that the statistics show what progresshas been made in agriculture of late, and how muchgreater it may become henceforth. The reports of theGeological Survey, conducted by reliable scientific men;the data obtained by official surveyors mapping out theCroTVTi Lands for many years ; the experience of farmersand stockmen and the testimony of experts who havevisited the colony, prove that it has an agriculturalfuture by no means negligible. To-day the farmproducts are worth probably half as much annually asthose of the fisheries.
