Notes
  • Significance: Construction of the Company Barracks began soon after the establishment of Fort Fred Steele in 1868, and they were occupied that year. Five identical log structures were built to house Army companies stationed at the fort. Each building was organized around a large central space in which the men slept. Along one side stood a colonnaded loggia which was flanked on either side by a sergeant's office. Modifications of the barracks by the military and post-military occupants had altered their appearance, but their original structure and organization remained. Two of the barracks had survived into the 1970's - these drawings are of the southernmost of the two. Three months after the structure was measured for HABS, on 31 Dec 76, both barracks were completely destroyed by fire.
