m the end of the lake, looking down a woodedglen, they caught at times distant glimpses of thedome of the Folgefond rising over the deep valleyleading to the fjord. At the village of Skare theydismissed the horses, and made the rest of thejourney, for about ten miles, on foot. The sceneryon the approach to Odde is of the most magnifi-cent description. They passed eight or ten water-falls, and in one place two such falls were pouring-their vast torrents from the same lake within 200yards of each other, over cliffs 2000 feet high, intothe river below; while on the opposite side of theglen a similar cataract precipitated its waters intothe same channel. The travellers stood close to oneof the twin-falls, and were wetted with its spray andstunned with the mingled roar of three mighty tor-rents, as they looked down upon the foaming riverbeneath.
