Le Badakchan est, depuis 1869, vassal de lAfghanistan et lui envoierégulièrement un tribut denviron 180000 francs et de 500 chevaux2;mais le pays est trop nettement délimité au point de vue géographiquepour quil ne garde pas toujours une existence politique distincte; il resteséparé par les montagnes neigeuses de lHindou-kouch, du Tchilral et duKafiristan, dont les brèches, inabordables aux montures, dépassent 5000 mè-tres délévation.
